In the novel, Flygirls, Josephine Edwards is one of only a few American women volunteers who joined the British Air Transport Auxiliary, a transportation and plane ferrying service for the RAF during WWII. She followed her boyfriend, another American volunteer, over to England and uses her first leave to visit him. In the scene before, she learned that he never came back to his billet and is presumed dead.
